Paphos Adonis Lions Club was formed from the English speaking community of Paphos, Cyprus. As part of an international body of like minded people, Lions Club International, its aim is to selflessly serve the local community by, amongst other things, raising money for local charities. To be a Lion is a commitment but if you are interested in becoming a member, do not hesitate in contacting us. Alternatively, you can become a Friend of Lions thereby supporting the work of the Lions without the degree of commitment required of a Lions member. For further information, contact Lion President Gordon Woolgar, tel: 26946757 or Lion Membership Alan Olliver, tel: 26936385. Alternatively, you may email on the link below.

The Club now consists of 15 members, 8 women and 7 men. We are always willing to welcome more.

It is with regret that we report the death of Lion Terry Wooding who lost his fight against cancer on Sunday 25th May. He will be sadly missed by his fellow Lions. Our sympathies go to Lion Maureen, his wife.

What we do
Among the Activities held in the past year, there has been:-

The annual Mini Golf Competition was held on 30th September 2007 at the Island Cove Adventure Golf. It was a close competition and the winner, seen here receiving her award from Lion President was Pat Graham. Over £ 650 was raised for charity.

In November 2007, we again welcomed returning visitors from Llandudno, the Trinity Players. Again, they gave their services free and we held a concert at the Markideon Theatre in Paphos and raised over £700 for charity.

A Ten-Pin Bowling competition was held on 27th February and Euro 475 was raised for charity.

We again had a float in the Paphos Carnival held in March. This year our theme was, "Save Water - Save Life"

The winner, Michael Edwards, receives the trophy from Maria Demetriou from Atlantic Insurance.

The Club presented Atalantic Insurance a plaque to thank them for supporting the Open Golf for the past twelve years. The photograph shows Maria Demtriou, centre, receiving the plaque from Lion President Susan Munns, left, and Lion Treasurer Gordon Woolgar, right.

Who we've helped

In 2006, we donated £3,000 to Elpida, a charity for children suffering from Leukemia and Cancer.

In December 2006, we donated over £ 1,000 to the victims of the Kissonerga Mudslide that had taken place at the end of October 2006.

In February 2007, £500 was donated to the Heart Association of Paphos to assist them in their building fund.

Other donations have been made to the Association of Friends of the Christos Steliou Ioannou Foundation, Friends of the Paphos Hospice and the Journey for Sight which is an International Lions Charity.

In October 2007, we presented the Red Cross in Paphos with two wheelchairs.

The parents and teachers of the International School of Paphos had an appeal to raise money for the treatment of one of their seven year old pupils, Jasmitha, for a brain tumour in Israel as no treatment was available in Cyprus. This treatment is ongoing and we have contributed £1,000 to this appeal. The photograph shows Jamitha and her mother with Lion Teddy and Lion Ruth of Dan Paz-Israel Lions who have been acting as "Uncle & Aunt" to Jasmitha on our behalf during her stay in Israel for treatment.

We have sent US$300 to the Centre for Handicapped, Sri Lanka, for the supply of two prothesis to a local boy and girl who have unfortunately lost limbs. It is the clubs intention to follow on with this work.

In December 2007, we donated £150 to the Konstandinou family from Tala who tragically lost their mother through cancer. The photograph shows the presentation at the Mukhtar's office in Tala.

Lion Terry is acting as Father Christmas with Lion Maureen as his helper at the Children's Christmas Party this year.

In April, we donated a double infusion pump to Paphos General Hospital. This unit will be an essential part of any intensive care given at the hospital.

In June, we donated paint to the Art & Wild Nature Foundation to refurbish their clubhouse. The Photograph shows Doerte Karteusch-Ioannou receiving the paint from Lion President Sue.

Also in June, we donated € 4,500.00 to the Kotivos Foundation (Noah's Ark), an charity established in Paphos to assist with children with severe handicaps.

We presented a cheque to the St. Michael's Hospice Building Fund in memory of Lion Terry Wooding who so tragically lost his fight aganst cancer.

We also donated two blood pressure measuring machines to the Paphos Cancer Patients Support Group for the use by their nurses.
